Sustainability Statement for Jay's Focus Media

Jay's Focus Media is a one-person business, so its footprint is small, but photography, video and websites still use travel, equipment, energy and data storage. This statement explains what I do to keep that impact down, and what I don't claim. Last updated: 30 October 2026.

At a Glance

  • Run from a 1980s home I've personally modernised into a sustainable powerhouse.
  • Travel by public transport where possible, or by electric vehicle charged from my own renewable energy.
  • One visit for photos, drone and video, planned to cut travel.
  • A paperless business: files are delivered digitally, and photographs are only printed when a customer needs prints.
  • Cloud storage and hosting in UK regions, for data sovereignty and a lower-carbon electricity mix.
  • No more data stored than needed: unedited files are deleted after 3 months and edited files after 12.
  • A lightweight, tracker-free website and a contact form that only uses computing power when someone sends an enquiry.
  • I don't claim to be carbon neutral or net zero, and I don't buy offsets to make that claim.

My Approach

I'm a passionate advocate for the environment. Alongside photography, I provide thought leadership and innovative solutions that help enterprises reduce the carbon footprint of their IT, and I apply the same principles to my own business.

Jay's Focus Media operates from a 1980s house that I've personally modernised into a sustainable powerhouse, generating and storing its own renewable energy. My book, From Cold to Gold, tells the full story of that transformation.

Shoots & Travel

  • Low-emission Travel. I use public transport where possible. Otherwise I travel by electric vehicle, charged from my own renewables: usually solar generation, or battery storage charged on an off-peak tariff, to reduce the impact further.
  • One Visit, Not Several. Interiors, exteriors, drone aerials and video are captured in a single appointment, so neither of us makes repeat trips.
  • Working Locally. Most work is across Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire. I group shoots in the same area on the same day where I can, and plan routes before setting off.
  • Planning Ahead. Weather, light and airspace are checked before the shoot, so wasted journeys and reshoots are rare.
  • Calls Before Visits. Quotes, planning and reviews are handled through the contact form, email and video calls rather than site visits, unless a visit is genuinely needed.

Equipment

  • Buy Well, Keep Longer. I choose durable kit and look after it, repairing equipment before replacing it.
  • Rechargeable Power. Cameras, drones and lights run on rechargeable batteries, which are cared for to extend their life and recycled properly at the end of it.
  • Responsible Disposal. Equipment I no longer need is sold or passed on for reuse where possible, and otherwise recycled through approved electrical waste schemes.

Paperless Working, Files & Printing

  • Paperless by Default. Quotes, bookings, invoices and records are all handled digitally.
  • Digital Delivery. Photos and videos are delivered electronically, so there are no discs, drives or packaging to post.
  • Only What's Needed. I edit and deliver the selection you need, not every frame, and don't store data longer than necessary. Unedited originals are deleted 3 months after delivery and edited files after 12 months, as set out in the privacy statement.
  • Sized for Purpose. Files are prepared at the right size for where they're going, which keeps listings, websites and social posts fast to load.
  • Prints Only When Required. I only ever print photographs when a customer needs prints, books or canvases, and I'll choose recycled or responsibly sourced materials where they're available.

Cloud, Websites & Data

My background is in cloud computing, where I've focused on running technology efficiently and sustainably. I apply the same thinking here, and to the websites I build for clients:

  • Cloud First, in the UK. I rely on cloud services rather than on-site servers for data storage, website hosting and more, using UK regions to keep data in the UK and benefit from the UK's increasingly low-carbon electricity mix.
  • Lightweight Pages. The home page loads in well under half a megabyte. Images are compressed, blog images load only when needed, and there are no adverts or tracking scripts.
  • Computing on Demand. The contact form runs on serverless services in Amazon Web Services' London region, which only use computing power when someone sends an enquiry, rather than a server running all day.
  • Dark Mode. The site follows your device's dark setting, which can use less power on many phone screens.
  • For Clients. Websites I build follow the same principles: optimised images, minimal code, efficient hosting and no unnecessary data kept.

Helping Clients Reduce Their Impact

  • Fewer Wasted Viewings. Clear photos, walkthrough video and floor plans help buyers and guests decide before they travel.
  • Inspections from the Air. A drone can give a first look at roofs and structures without scaffolding or access equipment, and repeat flights can track progress without repeated site visits.
  • Lasting Assets. A well-planned shoot produces images that work across listings, websites, social media and print, so fewer shoots are needed overall.

What I Don't Claim

This statement describes practical steps, not a certification. I haven't calculated a full carbon footprint for the business, I don't describe it as carbon neutral or net zero, and I don't use offsets to balance emissions. If that changes, I'll explain how the figures were worked out.

Feedback & Reviews

If you have ideas or questions about any of this, or need a shoot planned around particular environmental requirements, please get in touch through the contact form (choose ‘Ask a question’).
